‘a new woman’s world’ Avett Brothers

I only discovered the wonderful Avett Brothers this year when I heard their song ‘No Hard Feelings’ being played on the radio (NDR Kultur). I just have to share this gold nugget with you, my dear English course participants here in Germany. I found out they have been popular in the USA, where they are from, for over 15 years! Their lyrics are so overwhelmingly good that I have to introduce them to you here. I hope that my current and former English course students will enjoy their songs as much as I do. To me they seem extraordinarily good poets with their finger on the pulse of time first, but first class musicians too of course.Festival Express | Features | Creative Loafing Charlotte

I especially like their vision of a future where women get more influence in society. They sing it as if this futuristic scenario has already become reality. Here are the lyrics and the video clip for you to savour. Check out their song ‘the ballad of love and hate’ too.

new woman’s world by the Avett Brothers

New Woman’s World”

It used to be a man’s world but we didn’t treat it right
It used to be a man’s world but all we did was fight
I’m glad it’s finally in the hands of the women and the girls
I can’t wait to see what they’ll do with what’s left of the worldLadies, I’m sorry but we couldn’t seem to learn
How to live in peace, so Rome had to burn
And we cared about clean air but there was money to be made
And breathing’s nice but it don’t compare with getting paidIt used to be a man’s world but we didn’t treat it right
It used to be a man’s world but all we did was fight
I’m glad it’s finally in the hands of the women and the girls
I can’t wait to see what they’ll do with what’s left of the world

Please, I beg your pardon but we got a bit confused
Some of our brothers thought our sisters were born for getting used
Then we made the assumption that’s how it should be done
Then tried to excuse ourselves in the name of fun

Don’t get me wrong, hope ain’t fully gone
Scores of decent men built the road I’m standing on
But a lot of it has crumbled through prideful mistakes
And ashes cover much of what the flooding didn’t take

I know that we are giving you a lot to straighten out
The silver lining broke away from the thundercloud
And it took us a few thousand years to make a mess so fine
I bet y’all sort it out in less than half the time

It used to be a man’s world, excess in the extreme
It used to be a man’s world but we ran out of steam
We couldn’t seem to reach the grace that’s born in every girl
Still I hope that can lend a hand in this new woman’s world

Let me know if I can help out in this new woman’s world

clean batteries for e-mobility?

Were you considering to get yourself an e-bike or -car? Then you might have been worrying about how environmentally-friendly the batteries of these vehicles are. Maybe you are interested to learn that the University of Southern California has looked into this issue. Research from Germany is also pointing towards an alternative to lithium-based batteries. I would like to share their findings with you here.

are there any clean batteries?

batteries for e-mobility

Now all the consumers have to do is ask the e-bike and e-car producers to equip their products with redox-flow batteries. Maybe the companies that want to offer their employees a chance to lower their ‘carbon footprint’, could start demanding this from car and bike manufacturers on a larger scale.

I wish Steffi a wonderful time in India and want to say thank you so much for having baked those beautiful Christmas biscuits for us this week 🙂 Enjoy the flavors of India!

Here’s a BBC recipe for those who want to bake some snow man biscuits of their own:

Ingredients

For the decorations

  • white and blue fondant icing
  • white and black writing icing
  • sprinkles
  • 48 small chocolate balls
  • Method

    1. Pre heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

    2. Mix the flour and sugar together in a bowl, then rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

    3. Add the egg and vanilla essence and mix to form a soft dough.

    4. Roll out onto a well-floured work surface and cut into rounds. Place on greased baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.

    5. Cool on a wire rack. When completely cool decorate.

    6. Roll out the white fondant icing and cut out circles the same size as the biscuits, brush the backs of the circles with a little cooled boiled water and stick them to the biscuits, smoothing down the icing as you stick it on.

    7. Roll out the blue icing and cut out more circles, then cut these in half and using a little more water and stick on top of the white icing for the hats.

    8. Brush the hats with water in places where you want the sprinkles to stick and then sprinkle!

    9. Pipe decorations on the hat with the white writing icing, then pipe a small blob for the hat bobble and another for the nose – stick on the chocolate balls. Pipe black eyes and mouth then leave to set.
